Originated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1965, this worldwide event is observed by many organizations and governments throughout the world, who take advantage of the day to consider the status of adult and child literacy, note progress, and identify work still to be done. September 8, 2007: Content Standards Training will be held from 9 AM to 4 PM at Central Texas College, Academic Building #104, Room 101 & 102, 6200 West Central Texas Expressway, Killeen, 76541. The participants will study the rationale for the BEST Plus test and acquire sufficient mastery of the BEST Plus test to perform duties of a tester in administering, scoring, and interpreting the scores. September 15, 2007: GED Academy will be held at Yvonne Ewell Townview Center, 1201 E. 8th St., Dallas from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This is an in depth 18- hour professional development activity delivered in three 6-hour sessions. September 15, 2007: Math Workshop will be held from 1:30 – 4:30 PM at the Bastrop Public Library, 1100 Church Street, Bastrop 78602. Tim Bickerstaff and Ginny Marek will facilitate. This workshop will provide ABE/GED teachers with the information needed to recognize areas of mathematics with which students are having the most difficulty.  Geometry and measurement topics will be covered and teachers will learn how to adapt their instructional practices in order to help students perform better on the GED Mathematics Test. This training course is for any one interested in learning more about the Texas Adult Education Content Standards and Benchmarks (TAESB). The main objectives of the training are to familiarize the audience with the TAESB and to develop lesson plans using the standards and benchmarks. Audience members do not need to have previous knowledge of the TAESB, however, they do need to familiar with adult education programs and practices in Texas. Literacy Advance of Houston Symposium

September 15, 2007: Read all About it! Newspapers in the Classroom will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at United Way of Greater Houston, 50 Waugh Drive, Houston 77007. The presenter is Doris Larry. Training provides participants with creative methodology for use of newspapers in the ESL classroom. Participants will develop a story bank and a picture bank. The workshop will examine some major principles involved in developing students' listening skills. The presenter will then demonstrate how to plan lessons which use popular songs as a basis for practicing listening comprehension and free speaking. September 22, 2007: ESOL Academy: Techniques for Teaching Adult ESOL will be held from 9 AM to 4 PM at Austin Community College – Highland Business Center, Room 103.2, Austin, 78751. This twenty-four (24) hour course, held from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on four Saturdays - and led by Dr. Heide Wrigley - is for ESOL teachers who want to “beef up” their everyday teaching skills and for newer teachers of Adult ESOL. You will learn about and practice developing new strategies, activities, and lessons that will support your students’ learning. This workshop will let you increase your repertoire of skills and make it easier to make informed decisions about what to teach and why. After participation in the Academy and engagement with the ideas presented, you will know why some activities and approaches are more effective than others in fostering second language acquisition and promoting deeper learning. September 29, 2007: BEST Plus will be held at 1066 W. Magnolia, Ft Worth from 8:30 pm to 3:30 pm.  Participants who successfully complete this certification process will be able to give both the computer adapted and print based version of this new oral proficiency test.  This test was developed by the Center for Applied Linguistics.  It is an individually administered face-to-face scripted oral interview designed to assess the English language Proficiency of adult English language learners.  This test can be used for program placement, progress, program evaluation and diagnosis.  BEST Plus scores can be converted to SPL descriptors that align with NRS Functioning Level Descriptors.  For more information contact Dorris Baker (972) 749-2506 or dbaker@dallasisd.org or Aida Martinez (817) 852-1000.
