May 1, 2007: Adult Education 2007-2008 eGrants applications due. See the TEA Discretionary Grants website.

May 2 & 4, 2007: The ESOL Practitioner Toolkit will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Houston Community College, 3100 Main St. Seminar C, Houston 77002. Presenter is Margaret Flint. This interactive session will consist of two 3-hour sessions and will use “The Practitioner Toolkit: Working with Adult English Language Learners” that was developed by the National Center for Family Literacy and the Center for Applied Linguistics. This Toolkit provides needed support and serves as a resource to adult education and family literacy instructors who are new to serving English language learner adults and families. The Toolkit provides a variety of materials to help practitioners begin to meet the language and literacy development needs of the English Language Learner. May 3-4, 2007: Health Literacy Conference 2007. Sponsored by the Institute for Healthcare Advancement, this event at the Anaheim, CA Hyatt Regency, Orange County will focus on Health Literacy and Chronic Illness Management. This national conference provides a forum for sharing innovations and the latest in research and study in the area of health literacy. Applicable topics include clinical research, policy, legal commentary, orginal programs, and educational initiatives. For details, see the Institute for Healthcare Advancement website.         

May 4, 2007: TETN Training on Tips for Navigating eGrants in Grantee Profile will be conducted on Texas Education Agency's Texas Education Telecommunications Network (TETN) from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Central Time. May 4, and May 17, 2007: Adult Student Persistence Study Circle will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Houston Community College, 3100 Main Street, Seminar B, Houston, 77002. You must have attended the previous session on April 20th to attend this session. May 5, 2007: Bridges to Practice Learning Disabilities Training will be provided by Texas Association of Adult Literacy Councils in Tyler, Texas. Participants must have attended the April 28th session to participate in this Saturday session from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Location is the Tyler Junior College West Campus (1530 SSW Loop 323). May 5, 2007: Cultural and Learning in the ESOL Classroom Session III of III, Activities, will be held in Austin at a location to be determined. Linda Muñoz is the facilitator. Participants will spend the majority of time developing or modifying culture and language learning activities that they might do with their specific class of adult learners. Those teachers who have attended all three sessions will be given a book focused on activities to coordinate culture learning and language learning in the ESOL classroom. May 5, 2007: ESL Academy: Listening and Speaking Session 2: This course presents ideas and activities to get students interacting in English even at the very beginning levels. Teachers will learn how to use pictures and drawings to stimulate conversations, create games to keep students talking, and develop simple role plays to teach every day English. Session 2 will be held on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Socorro Community Learning Center, 313 S. Rio Vista Rd., El Paso. May 11-12, 2007: ESL Academy: Teaching with Technology Session 1: This institute will demonstrate how pictures, story boards, and PowerPoint® presentations can be used to engage students and promote active learning. Participants learn how to use visual materials effectively in teaching and how to engage students in creating their own projects. Teachers will have access to digital cameras, lap tops, and LCD projectors that can be checked out for use in the classroom. Session 1 will be held on Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Socorro Community Learning Center, 313 S. Rio Vista Rd., El Paso. Map to SCLC. May 12, 2007: BEST Plus Training will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at Houston Community College, 3100 Main St. Lab BD 12, Houston 77002. Presenter is Carter Frost. The participants will study the rationale for the BEST PLUS test and acquire sufficient mastery of the BEST Plus test to perform duties of a tester in administering, scoring, and interpreting the scores. NOTE: Participants are required to have a TAG manual. No one will be allowed to attend the session without a TAG manual. May 12, 2007: Building Listening and Reading Strategies For Developing and Enhancing a Multidimensional ESOL Classroom. May 12, 2007: Teaching Writing to Adult English Language Learners will be held from 9-4 pm at the Kyle Learning Center, 21393 North IH 35, Kyle 78640. Adult learners of English have many reasons for wanting to write. Most need to write to carry out functional tasks such as filling out forms, taking messages, writing email messages, or writing notes to teachers. Others may need writing skills to succeed in academic studies or to advance in a job. For many learners, writing enhances language acquisition; as they put their thoughts on paper and share with others, they practice the language structures and vocabulary they are learning in the classroom. The purpose of this workshop is to help instructors of Adult English Language learners become facilitators who help their learners to effectively communicate their ideas in writing and develop a voice in their new culture. The target audience for this workshop is new and experienced teachers, tutors, and classroom aids. The facilitator is Linda Muñoz. May 13-19, 2007: Reading Is Fun Week. Sponsored by Reading Is Fundamental, Inc., this nationwide observation is a time for kids, teachers, and parents to celebrate how much fun reading can be! There are no rules with RIF Week — celebrate however you want! Hold a reading rally, challenge kids to read 100 pages, have children dress up like their favorite storybook character, or even invite your mayor to read aloud. Visit the Reading Is Fundamental website to find suggestions and materials for your celebration.

May 14-15, 2007: Training of Tutor Trainers: Principles of Participatory Education will be hosted by Texas Association of Adult Literacy Councils (TAALC) in Marshall, Texas at the Hampton Inn, 5100 E. End Blvd. South. Two-day event (8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. each day) is intended to give trained tutors, who have been through tutor training and have some experience working with literacy students, the skills and techniques needed to provide quality tutor training for their organization. May  16, 2007: Building Bridges to Success: Helping Adult Learners Transition to the Workforce and College Training Programs will be held from 1:30 to 3:00 pm. This Virtual session will be facilitated by Tamara Clunis and Pat Hernandez. The discussion will be centered on strategies and promising practices related to adult learner transitions to workforce and college training programs. Registration is required. May 18-19, 2007: GED Math Academy: Teaching Math in the Multilevel Classroom Session 3 – Focus on Graphic Literacy and Technology will be held on Friday from 4:30 -7:30 pm and on Saturday from 8:30 am - 3:30 pm at the Socorro Community Learning Center, 313 S. Rio Vista Rd, El Paso. This academy is appropriate for any adult instructor who wants to develop teaching strategies for preparing students for the math section of the GED. This is the last of three workshops. Participation in all three sessions and the completion of a follow up activity is required in order to qualify for the stipend. May 19, 2007: BEST Plus Scoring Refresher Toolkit will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Houston Community College, 3100 Main St. Lab BD 12, Houston 77002. Presenter is Judy Bowman. This training is designed to recalibrate certified BEST Plus test administrators. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their own strengths and weaknesses regarding administration and accurate scoring of the BEST Plus. Participants will practice using the scoring rubric to provide justification for scoring each of the three language aspects. After practice, participants will complete a BEST Plus scoring calibration assessment. Each participant must bring his/her own TAG (Test Administrator’s Guide) and their own Scoring Refresher Workbook.
