June 1-2, 2007: ESL Academy: Teaching with Technology Session 2:This institute will demonstrate how pictures, story boards, and PowerPoint® presentations can be used to engage students and promote active learning. Participants learn how to use visual materials effectively in teaching and how to engage students in creating their own projects. Session 2 will be held on Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Socorro Community Learning Center, 313 S. Rio Vista Rd., El Paso, TX. Map to SCLC. NOTE: This is the second of three workshops, remaining session will be June 22-23. Participation in all three sessions and completion of a follow-up activity is required in order to qualify for the stipend available. June 8, 2007: Brain Research Institute will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Cy-Fair College, 9191 Barker Cypress Road, TECH 102 & 101, Cypress, Houston 77433. Presenter is Dr. Janet Zadina. In this lively presentation, peppered with humor, music, and audience participation, Dr. Janet Zadina engages and empowers educators. Through Power Point illustrations technical material is presented in an understandable and entertaining style. The purpose of this presentation is to empower educators by providing them with 1) a basic understanding of brain and language processes and terminology so that they can understand and evaluate recent brain research on learning, 2) a brief review of scientific literature on second language research, and 3) strategies for maximizing student motivation and learning based on this research. June 12-13, 2007: A Technology Institute focusing on audio and video technology tools will be held 9 AM-4 PM both days at the Kyle Learning Center, 21393 North IH-35, Kyle, Texas 78640. June 12, 9 AM - 12 PM: CE GRT Using Audacity for Media Creation. This session is a hands-on introduction to Audacity, a free software tool for creation, editing, and conversion of audio files. This is a 3 hour session. If you plan to attend the afternoon session, you may eat lunch at a nearby restaurant. Or, if you prefer to bring a lunch, a refrigerator, microwave and sink are available.

June 12, 1 PM - 4 PM: CE GRT Introduction to PhotoStory 3. This session is a hands-on introduction to Photostory 3, a free software tool for creating digital slideshows with multi-media capability. To make the hands-on practice more meaningful, you are encouraged to bring with you in digital format (on a flash drive or CD) a group of photos and/or a PowerPoint presentation you have created. (3 hours).

June 13, 9 AM - 4 PM: CE GRT Creating Video with Windows Movie Maker. This session is a hands-on introduction to Windows Movie Maker, a free software tool for creation and editing of video. You are welcome to bring previously recorded video in digital format (on a flash drive or CD) to use during the hands-on practice. This is a 6 hour, all day session with an hour break for lunch. You may eat at a nearby restaurant, or, if you prefer to bring a lunch, a refrigerator, microwave and sink are available.

June 13, 2007: BEST Plus Refresher. This training is targeted to individuals who have been trained as BEST Plus Administrators. A new Refresher booklet will be provided. The training will be held from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Socorro Community Learning Center on 313 S. Rio Vista Rd., El Paso, TX 79927. June 15, 2007: Learning Disabilities in the Adult Education Classroom – Reading and Making Math Fun and Painless! This training will discuss and provide hands-on Reading and Math strategies for adults with learning difficulties. June 15, 2007: BEST Plus - Test Administrator Training - This training is targeted to new administrators of the BEST Plus test. The training will be held from 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at the Ysleta Community Learning Center on 121 Padres Dr., El Paso, TX 79907 in the Computer Lab.Limited to 20 participants.Based on the number of registrations received, there may be a maximum limit implemented for each program. Target audience is adult education teachers and program directors, and state leadership project staff. June 29, 2007: Using Newspaper Ads to Teach Adults Math will be held from 9:00 a.m. to Noon, at the Houston Community College, 3100 Main St. Seminar A. Houston 77002. Presenter is Doris Larry. Teachers will use newspaper ads to create math lessons and activities for situations that adult learners encounter in all aspects of their lives—grocery shopping, budgeting, shopping for clothes and household items, shopping for cars, using coupons, shopping for their children’s school supplies and clothes, etc. Using actual newspaper resources instead of just problems from a text add a reality dimension to the math class and will increase student interest and motivation.
