be hosted by Texas Workforce Commission at the Omni Southpark
Hotel in Austin. Designed to increase staff capacity through
knowledge and information exchange, these forums provide an opportunity
for workforce partners to collaborate, innovate, and eliminate

6, 2007: Courage to Teach Study
Group will be held from 1:00 p.m. to
3:00 p.m. at Sutton Even Start Program, 7402 Albacore, Houston
77074. Presenter is Dr. Glenda Smith. This
Professional Development course involves the reading and discussion
of Parker Palmer’s The Courage to Teach. The participants
will read and prepare discussion notes for two chapters each
week from questions provided by the instructor. Additional assignments
will include journaling and writing reflections on readings.
This is a 20-hour course. (Session 4 of 4 - Previous sessions
were held January 16, 23 & 30.) You must have attended

8-9, 2007: University of North
Texas' 15th Annual Conference on Parent Education. Pre-conference
workshop will be held February 7 (Wednesday). Prominent speakers
from across the nation will address parents, professionals and
students in one of the nation's most renowned conferences on
parent education. Location is the UNT University
Union, one block west of Welch and West Prairie streets in Denton.
Pre-registration, which ends Jan. 30, costs $90 for one day (Feb.
8 or 9) or $160 for two days (Feb. 8 and 9). Regular registration
for the conference costs $110 for one day or $210 for two days.

Training will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at
Houston Community College, 3100 Main St., BD 12 (Basement) Houston
77002. Presenter is Carter Frost. The participants will study
the rationale for the BEST PLUS test and acquire sufficient mastery
of the BEST Plus test to perform duties of a tester in administering,
scoring, and interpreting the scores. NOTE: Participants
are required to have a TAG manual.

10, 2007: Cultural and Learning
in the ESOL Classroom
Session II of III, Cross-Cultural Communication and Understanding will
be held at St. John’s Public Library, 7500 Blessing Avenue,
Austin 78752. Linda Muñoz is the facilitator. Participants
will spend time developing skills and strategies to improve cross
cultural communication between themselves and their adult learners
as well as between adult learners in their classrooms. Although
Spanish language and Mexican culture still predominate in central
Texas ESOL classrooms, there is a steadily growing number of
diverse cultural and linguistic groups coming into the central
Texas region and joining our classes. Participants will be introduced
to cultural specific websites and information that can better
prepare them as they welcome learners from around the world into
their classroom. You must have attended Session I and

10, 2007: ESL Academy:
Listening and Speaking Session 1: Do your students have
trouble understanding what English speakers are saying? Are they
too shy to speak up in class (let alone outside of class) because
their English is not good enough? Do your students say they want
more opportunities for conversation? This course presents ideas
and activities to get students interacting in English even at
the very beginning levels. Teachers will learn how to use pictures
and drawings to stimulate conversations, create games to keep
students talking, and develop simple role plays to teach every
day English. Photographs, popular songs and video clips will
be used to illustrate how students can be motivated to speak
more English and improve their listening skills. Session 1 will
be held on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Socorro
Community Learning Center, 313 S. Rio Vista Rd., El Paso. Map

is the first of three workshops, remaining sessions will be May
5 and June 9. Participation in all three sessions and

Association of America (LDA)
Annual Conference will be held in Pittsburgh, PA. LDA
is a non-profit grassroots organization whose members are individuals
with learning disabilities, their families, and the professionals
who work with them. LDA strives to advance the education and
general welfare of children and adults with learning disabilities.

16, 2007: Professional Develoment
Planning Workshop (PDPW)
Follow-up will be held from 10 to 12 noon at the Kyle
Learning Center, 21393 North IH 35, Kyle 78640. This workshop
is presented in collaboration with the Texas Adult Credential
Project and is designed for teachers who have previously attended
a Credential Professional Development Planning Workshop (PDPW)
and are interested in working on the Credential, but need a “refresher” in
order to get started. New information about CredITS and Writing
Reflections will be included, and assistance with completing

17, 2007: Math Tools for the Adult
Education Teacher (Series of four trainings) This multi-day
workshop was developed by the South Central Region GREAT Center
to provide the adult education practitioner with research based
techniques and strategies that will improve the math skills of
adult learners. Research conducted in 2003 by the National Assessment
of Adult Literacy found that nearly 50% of US adults have inadequate
math and Numeracy skills. With these alarming statistics, the
Office of Vocational and Adult Education understand the importance
of providing adult educators with necessary tools to offer quality
math instruction to adult learners.

a Second Language Tutor Training Workshop will be held
