The participants will study the rationale for the BEST Plus test and acquire sufficient mastery of the BEST Plus test to perform duties of a tester in administering, scoring, and interpreting the scores. August 6-7, 2007: Texas Association of Adult Literacy Councils (TAALC) State Conference. READ, WRITE, LEARN is the theme of this year’s conference. Networking opportunities and workshops will include such topics as community literacy, basic literacy, ESL & GED instruction, marketing your program to potential funders, program management, health literacy, and more. August 6-8, 2007: Using the National Assessment of Adult Literacy Data File and Tools For Research, Secondary Analyses and Policy Development (NAAL Data Set Training) will be hosted by NCES in Washington, DC. This "advanced studies seminar" is open to institutional researchers and planners, education practitioners, policymakers, and association members, as well as faculty and advanced graduate students from colleges and universities nationwide. August 7, 2007: GED Testing Accommodations and Adaptations. This hour-long Webinar will be hosted by National Association for Adults with Special Learning Needs (NAASLN) from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Central Time, with a repeat session from 1:00 to 2:00 Central Time. Participation requires a computer and a telephone, occurs in “real time” with Q&A, provides certificate of attendance, and costs $20.00 for NAASLN members and $30.00 for non-members. August 11, 2007:  Effective Multilevel Strategies for Adult English Language Learners will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at North Harris College, 2700 W. W. Thorne Drive, Houston 77073. Magnolia, Ft Worth from   8:30 pm to 3:30 pm.  Participants who successfully complete this certification process will be able to give both the computer adapted and print based version of this new oral proficiency test.  This test was developed by the Center for Applied Linguistics.  It is an individually administered face-to-face scripted oral interview designed to assess the English language Proficiency of adult English language learners.  This test can be used for program placement, progress, program evaluation and diagnosis.  BEST Plus scores can be converted to SPL descriptors that align with NRS Functioning Level Descriptors.  For more information contact Dorris Baker (972) 749-2506 or Aida Martinez (817) 852-1000. This training for instructors in adult education and workforce development will be held at the Martha O’Bryan Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Preparing for Work, developed by Equipped for the Future at the Center for Literacy Studies, University of Tennessee, is a skills-based course designed for implementation in organizations and agencies involved in preparing their clients and students for entry-level work. Each of the instructional modules that comprise the Preparing for Work course has integrated the specific SCANS tasks (Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Basic Skills) and the EFF Content Standards, identified on the National Work Readiness Credential (NWRC) profile.
