April 12, 2007: National Drop Everything and Read Day is a special reading celebration to remind and encourage families to make reading together on a daily basis a family priority. On April 12th, families are asked to take at least 30 minutes to put aside all distractions and enjoy books together. Schools, libraries, and bookstores are planning to host events. April 13-14, 2007: Bridges to Practice Training will be held at 626 Lindale, Houston and is hosted by Harris County Department of Education and Texas Association of Adult Literacy Councils. April 14 , 2007: ESOL Academy I: Techniques for Teaching Adult ESOL will be held from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at Pickle Elementary School Library, 1101 Wheatley, Austin 78752. This course is for ESOL teachers who want to beef up their everyday teaching skills or are new to teaching adult ESOL. This total course will be 24 hours in length. We encourage directors and coordinators to identify ESOL teachers in their program who would benefit from this course, but teachers may self-select and enroll themselves. The instructor will be Dr. Heide Spruck Wrigley. Participants must have attended the previous sessions of the Institute to attend this session. April 14, 2007: BEST Pluswill be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the Harris County Department of Education, Irvington Learning Center, 6300 Irvington Blvd, Houston 77022. Presenter is Judy Bowman. The participants will study the rationale for the BEST PLUS test and acquire sufficient mastery of the BEST Plus test to perform duties of a tester in administering, scoring, and interpreting the scores. NOTE: Participants are required to have a TAG manual. No one will be allowed to attend the session without a TAG manual. April 17, 2007: Coaching Customers on Job Retention and Earnings Gain, Presented by Jodie Sue Kelly, Cygnet Associates, 10:00 am —Noon at Education Service Center, 1314 Hines, San Antonio, TX 78208. In this fast-paced, two-hour session, Jodie Sue Kelly will examine what post-placement services need to be available to help clients retain and advance in jobs, and will offer practical techniques for building job retention into placement as well as techniques that get results after the get the job. These three sessions are designed for: Counselors, Case Managers, Supervisors, Educators, Leaders from on-stops, and state and local Workforce Boards, Youth-serving agencies, Vocational rehabilitation and disability organizations, Ex-offender programs, Welfare to work agencies, and Others who serve individuals with barriers to employment.

April 20, 2007: Grammar Review for Adult Education Teachers will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at Houston Community College, 3100 Main St. Seminar A. Houston 77002. Presenter is Lauri Cherian. This Professional Development training is a basic grammar refresher for teachers, providing definitions for major parts of speech and identification of sentence structure. It is an interactive presentation and will provide teachers with practical activities to use in the adult education classroom. April 21, 2007: BEST Plus Scoring Refresher Toolkit will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at College of the Mainland, 1200 Amburn Rd. LRC Bldg. Rm. 279, Texas City 77591. Presenter is Judy Bowman. This training is designed to recalibrate certified BEST Plus test administrators. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their own strengths and weaknesses regarding administration and accurate scoring of the BEST Plus. Participants will practice using the scoring rubric to provide justification for scoring each of the three language aspects. After practice, participants will complete a BEST Plus scoring calibration assessment. Each participant must bring his/her own TAG(Test Administrator’s Guide) and their own Scoring Refresher Workbook. April 21, 2007: BEST Plus Refresher Training will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at College of the Mainland, 1200 Amburn Rd. LRC Bldg. Rm. 279, Texas City 77591.  Presenter is Judy Bowman. This training is designed for additional practice before the BEST Plus Toolkit Calibration training or as corrective training for remediation following unsuccessful completion of the BEST Plus Toolkit training. CAL certified test administrators will review objectives, content areas and question types of the BEST Plus oral interview, review the scoring rubric, review appropriate test administration procedures, and practice scoring the test. April 21, 2007: Math Workshop-Strategies for Teaching Word Problems will be held at Kyle Learning Center 21393 North IH-35, Kyle, Texas from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm for teachers of ABE, GED, ESOL. Participants will learn how to "demystify" math and word problems by building on the existing math abilities of students, how to focus on problem-solving, reasoning, and understanding rather than memorization or computational skills, and how to teach math as a "web" of integrated skills rather than as a linear sequence. April 27-28, 2007: GED Math Academy: Teaching Math in the Multilevel Classroom Session 2 – Focus on Calculation will be held on Friday from 4:30 -7:30 pm and on Saturday from 8:30 am - 3:30 pm at the Socorro Community Learning Center, 313 S. Rio Vista Rd, El Paso. This academy is appropriate for any adult instructor who wants to develop teaching strategies for preparing students for the math section of the GED. This is the second of three workshops (remaining session will be on May 18-19). Participation in all three sessions and the completion of a follow up activity is required in order to qualify for the stipend. April 30, 2007: Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros (Day of the Child/Day of the Book). This nationwide celebration of children, families, and reading is held annually on April 30. The celebration emphasizes the importance of advocating literacy for every child regardless of linguistic and cultural background.
