2009 Texas Grant Recipients
- Communities In Schools of Central Texas, Austin
To support the ASPIRE family literacy program as it implements the innovative “The Incredible Years” curriculum focused on strengthening and fostering parents’ involvement in their children’s learning.
- Deer Park Independent School District, Pasadena
To support the Deer Park family literacy program, which provides teenage and adult parents with literacy and other skills. The overarching goal is to help parents become full partners in their child’s education.
- Halpin Elementary School/Houston Independent School District, Houston
To support the Halpin family literacy programas it increases the number of home visits by hiring additional home-visitation staff. Families also will take part in “literacy adventures” at the Children’s Museum of Houston.
- Hays Consolidated Independent School District, Kyle
To support the Padres Fantasticos Even Start program, allowing it to offer childcare and transportation for families who otherwise cannot attend literacy classes. The program includes the “Ropes Challenge” event to promote family cooperation.
- Lamar Consolidated Independent School District,
Rosenberg
To support Partners/Share, providing developmental childcare while parents and older siblings receive reading instruction. In the program’s “Share” component, parents use their new skills to engage their children in literacy activities.
- Literacy Council of Tyler,
Tyler
To support the Family Learning Center of Tyler, enabling it to collaborate with Tyler Junior College and Tyler Independent School District in working with low-income families. Additional home visits supported by this grant will provide one-on-one instruction for parents.

Northside Independent School District, San Antonio
To supportProject Tumaini(Swahili for “to hope and believe with confidence”), a program that reaches out to new refugees from many different nations, offering families the opportunity to learn the language of their new home country.
- Park Place Elementary School/Houston Independent School District, Houston
To support the Park Place Even Start program, which offers family-literacy services to low-income Hispanic and Vietnamese immigrant families. The program will partner with local agencies to address the needs of these families while helping parents become more involved in their children’s education.
- Sutton Elementary School/Houston Independent School District,
Houston
To support START (acronym for “Sutton: Together All Read in Texas”), which delivers English-language instruction as well as cultural experiences at the Children’s Museum of Houston.
