The
First Lady's Family Literacy Initiative for Texas
|
| The
Texas Center for the Advancement of Literacy and Learning provides
technical assistance and evaluation for The First Lady's Family
Literacy Initiative for Texas grant program. The Initiative is a
program of the Barbara Bush Texas Fund for Family Literacy. Since
1996, the Initiative has awarded grants totaling over $2 million
to 110 family literacy programs around the state. Eligible applicants
include schools, community colleges, universities, charter schools,
prison programs, Head Start and Even Start programs and libraries.
The money for this Initiative is raised at the Barbara Bush Foundation's
annual fundraisers, A Celebration of Reading, held in Houston and
Dallas.
The grants are awarded to family literacy programs that focus on reading instruction for both parents and their children. It is often said that the home is the child's first school, the parent is the child's first teacher, and reading is the child's first subject. "Family literacy programs throughout Texas work on the front lines of the battle against illiteracy. They help adults equip themselves to meet the daily needs of their families, their own literacy needs, and to prepare their children for success in school and in life. Clearly, Texans are committed to strong, effective literacy programs." (First Lady Laura Bush, Honorary Chair of the First Lady's Family Literacy Initiative for Texas). ~ Our Grantee Links ~
