About the Barbara Bush Fellowships

Since 2007, TCALL has hosted Barbara Bush Fellows with funding from the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. The Barbara Bush Fellows are doctoral students at Texas A&M University who are engaged in research, writing, and development of resources and presentations in topics relevant to family literacy.

These generous fellowships consist of a one-year award, which may be used to offset the cost of travel expenses to conferences, dissertation research, and/or tuition, fees, and maintenance while a student is enrolled at Texas A&M University. During their fellowship year, students will have the opportunity to present their work at national family literacy conferences and publish their research in peer-reviewed journals.

Potential Research Areas of Interest for Barbara Bush Family Literacy Fellows

how family literacy programs can successfully recruit “hard to reach” populations and foster persistence in meeting literacy goals
how family literacy programs can respect the culture and native language of dual-language families while developing their English language skills
program approaches that accommodate cultural differences in parenting style; culturally sensitive approaches to encouraging family involvement in children’s education
effect on children's educational outcomes of parents' literacy level, educational attainment/motivation, and involvement in their children's education
family literacy program evaluation topics, such as effect of evaluation on program sustainability, comparison of urban and rural family literacy evaluation plans, etc.
potential application and efficacy of home-based child care or parenting assessment tools for family literacy programs' home visit component (for example, the new CHELLO, Child/Home Early Language and Literacy Observation Tool developed by Neuman, Dwyer and Koh and published by Brookes Publishing)
effects of parent education in family literacy programs on parenting behaviors
effects of family literacy program participation on school readiness for participating children, as well as the literacy development of the parent
impact of teacher professional development on family literacy programs
