January 2, 2014: Workforce 101: (Target Audience: Ysleta CLC Instructors and Staff only) Training will be facilitated by Elizabeth Moya. The objective of the training is to assist adult education and literacy providers in better understanding the workforce system and services. January 6, 2014: Lesson Planning: How to Plan an Effective Lesson. Trainer is Dorothy Babbington. This training will be held at Bilingual Education Institute, 6060 Richmond, Rm. 205, Houston, TX 77057 from 9:30am – 12:30pm. This training is designed to help ABE/ASE/ESOL teachers focus on how to plan, develop and write effective lessons. Hands-on and interactive activities will be included. January 6, 2014: Classroom Career and Educational Pathways: (Target Audience: YCLC and SCLC Instructors only) Training will be facilitated by Melissa Sadler-Nitu. This training will move from theory to hands-on classroom activities. Theory behind the Career and Educational Pathways includes: student-centered approach to the classroom, incorporating 21st Century skills, and transitioning adult learners to post-secondary training and/or the workplace. January 7-8, 2014: TEAMS: An (Extended) Introduction for Teachers and Administrators. Trainer is Bill Medina. This training will be held at Houston Community College, 3100 Main, Room BD-12 (Basement), Houston, TX 77002 from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm both nights.  Participants must attend both nights for credit.  This training provides teachers and other AE staff with an overview of TEAMS, how to access it and how to utilize it to improve program performance.  The session includes a review of the National Reporting System, State Assessment and Goals Setting/Attainment Policy for Adult Education, and Adult Education Performance Measures.  TEAMS reports such as : Participant Roster, Performance Report, Table 4 & 4b Combined, Participant Roster w/Latest Assessment and GED® Match are reviewed. January 10-11, 2014: GED® Math Academy II: Equations of Line Using Point Slope Form of a Line, Session 1: (Target Audience: ABE/GED® Instructors) Training will be facilitated by Reda Berry. Training details will be posted at a later date. Content is new and not a repeat of previous sessions. Sessions are stand-alone and can be registered for individually. Participation in all session is not required. However, to be eligible of a training stipend attendees must complete all interim activities and participate in all sessions. January 11, 2014: BEST Plus Scoring Refresher Toolkit. Trainer is Kay Vaccaro. This training will be held at Houston Community College – Spring Branch Campus, 1010 W. Sam Houston Pkwy. N., Rm 213, Houston, TX 77043 from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm.  This training is designed to recalibrate approved BEST Plus test administrators. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their own strengths and weaknesses regarding administration and accurate scoring of the BEST Plus. Participants will practice using the scoring rubric to provide justification for scoring each of the three language aspects. After practice, participants will complete a BEST Plus scoring calibration assessment. Each participant must bring his/her own TAG (Test Administrator’s Guide) and their own Scoring Refresher Workbook. Please note: This session will be limited to 15 participants when the test will be administered as part of the training. What are these standards?  2). Why were these standards developed and by whom?  3). How can these standards be implemented into an adult education classroom?  4). January 17, 2014: Activating Critical Thinking Skills: Utilizing Manipulatives in the 2014 GED® Math Classroom: (Target Audience: ABE/ASE Instructors ) Training will be facilitated by Cecilia Hines. This workshop will provide GED® Math Instructors with a variety of student-centered, classroom activities that activate prior knowledge, and encourage critical-thinking and cooperative learning. The workshop will provide GED® instructors with the tools they need to make learning math an enjoyable and productive experience for their students. While at the same time providing students with the mathematical skills they need to pass the math portion of the GED® test. This training will provide excellent ideas to teach fractions, percent, geometry, and algebra. The training will be supported with visual aids and engaging classroom activities designed to support student learning in preparation for the new 2014 GED® test. Module 1 explains state and federal policy requirements for implementing a distance education program. Participants will learn about the specific distance learning curriculum models and how to award direct and proxy hours for students. Numerous distance education tools and local program examples of the benefits and challenges of providing distance learning classes are provided. Module 1 is the first of two mandatory training requirements for local programs directors and teachers who are implementing a distance education program for the first time. January 18, 2014: Andragogy: The Art of Teaching Adults. Trainer is Flora Allen. Beginning Literacy ESOL training provides instructors with techniques and strategies to improve the persistence and performance of learners in this lowest level of ESOL. This training will be held at Lone Star College-North Harris College, 2700 WW Thorne, Winship Bldg, Houston, TX 77073 from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm.  This training may be done BEFORE the BEST Plus Scoring Refresher Toolkit for review, fine-tuning, and practice; OR it may be done AFTER the BEST Plus Scoring Refresher Toolkit as remediation and practice following an unsuccessful completion of the BEST Plus Scoring Refresher Toolkit training. CAL approved test administrators will review objectives, content areas and question types of the BEST Plus oral interview, review the scoring rubric, review appropriate test administration procedures, and practice scoring the test. January 23, 2014: Webinar on Sector Strategies and Career Pathways. Free webinar from 1:00 to 2:30 PM Central Time will be hosted the Center for Postsecondary and Economic Success at CLASP (Center for Law and Social Policy) and the National Network of Success Partners. Participants will learn about two approaches that states and communities have adopted to help individuals attain skills and credentials, help meet employers’ workforce needs, and strengthen the economic vitality of communities. Sector initiatives (regional industry-focused workforce partnerships) customize solutions for multiple employers and increase access to good jobs for low-income individuals. Career pathways connect progressive levels of basic skills and postsecondary education, training, and supportive services to optimize the progress and success of individuals. This session will provide adult educators with information, resources, and strategies that they can use to help students build the skills necessary to prepare for the 2014 GED® test. Participants will dig deeper into the role that integrated reading and writing plays in Reasoning through Language Arts test, Social Studies, and Science tests. Participants will:

  • learn how to score writing responses in all three areas and then use that information to assist students in building their writing skills,
  • address the unique challenges present in reading nonfiction texts, and
  • practice using research-based strategies to improve students’ integrated reading/writing skills.

March 3-4, 2014: BEST Plus Training of Trainers (ToT): (Target Audience: To Become BEST Plus Trainers) Training will be facilitated by Center for Applied Linguistics through collaboration among Far West and Coastal GREAT Centers. BEST Plus is an individually administered, face-to-face oral interview designed to assess the English language proficiency of adult English language learners in the United States. BEST Plus is a combined test of listening and speaking skills. As an oral assessment, BEST Plus provides a short, practical test that meets the accountability needs of programs that report to the National Reporting System (NRS). For individuals interested in becoming certified BEST Plus trainers, the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) utilizes a train-the-trainer (TOT) model that allows individuals or groups to complete a trainer certification process. Upon completion of the process, these individuals are certified to provide BEST Plus test administrator training workshops. BEST Plus is an individually administered, face-to-face oral interview designed to assess the English language proficiency of adult English language learners in the United States. BEST Plus is a combined test of listening and speaking skills. As an oral assessment, BEST Plus provides a short, practical test that meets the accountability needs of programs that report to the National Reporting System (NRS). For individuals interested in becoming certified BEST Plus trainers, the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) utilizes a train-the-trainer (TOT) model that allows individuals or groups to complete a trainer certification process. March 28 - March 29, 2014: Digging Deeper into the 2014 GED® Test, Session 3-Putting the Writing Rubrics to Work in Your Classroom: (Target Audience: ABE/GED Instructors) Training will be facilitated by Bonnie Goonen and Susan Pittman-Shetler. This session will provide adult educators with information, resources, and strategies that they can use to help students build the skills necessary to prepare for the 2014 GED® test. Participants will dig deeper into the role that integrated reading and writing plays in Reasoning through Language Arts test, Social Studies, and Science tests. Participants will:

  • learn how to score writing responses in all three areas and then use that information to assist students in building their writing skills,
  • address the unique challenges present in reading nonfiction texts, and
  • practice using research-based strategies to improve students’ integrated reading/writing skills.

To be eligible of a training stipend, attendees must complete all interim activities and participate in all sessions. Follow up scheduled for April 11. This one-day Training-the-Instructor workshop from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm at Comfort Suites Pearland, 2806 Miller Ranch Road, Pearland 77584.To use the Roots of Success curriculum, programs must have a certified Roots of Success instructor. To be certified, instructors go through a one-day Training-the-Instructor workshop where they receive all of the teaching materials they need to teach Roots of Success (Instructor’s Manual and multimedia DVD) and are licensed to teach the course. Training and certification are a one-time step; no further or continuing training is needed for instructors. Once certified, instructors can teach any and all customized versions of Roots of Success.  Lunch will be provided.

October 23, 2014: Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Town Hall Meeting. U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) will host a Region 4 WIOA Town Hall in Irving, Texas, as one in a series of national listening sessions designed to support strong implementation of the new legislation nationwide. The all-day session will provide a great deal of structured feedback to the U.S. Departments of Labor, Education, and Health and Human Service's Administration for Children and Families (ACF) around implementation challenges and considerations. Target audience includes state and local leaders who help to design and/or administer: WIA/WIOA and Wagner-Peyser grants; Department of Education's Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education and Vocational Rehabilitation programs; TANF programs; Apprenticeship programs; Veterans employment and training programs; Secondary education systems; and Higher education systems. November 12-14, 2014: National Conference on Effective Transitions in Adult Education 2014. The National College Transitions Network (NCTN) will host its eighth annual conference in Providence, RI. One goal of NCTN is to support adult and college educators and administrators, professional developers, researchers, and policy developers by offering this national conference and by organizing a transition strand at the Commission on Adult Basic Education (COABE) annual conference (scheduled for April 22-25, 2015 in Denver, CO). Interactive training focuses on appropriate multi-sensory lesson planning strategies, group strategies, differentiated instruction and integration of transitional career awareness and post-secondary studies. December 6, 2014: TEAMS for Teachers (a TRAIN PD Consortium event). The training will be held at 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM at Howard College - San Angelo, Room B105. This workshop was developed to help teachers understand how to use the TEAMS Participant Roster report to monitor student progress and improve program performance. First, we will review the National Reporting System educational functioning levels and minimum program performance targets. Then we will analyze a sample TEAMS Participant Roster report to discover relationships between retention, performance and assessment. Registration is closed.

December 6, 2014: ESL Strategies: Teaching Communication through Scenarios (a TRAIN PD Consortium event). The training will be held at 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM at ESC Region 20 in San Antonio. Presenter is Irene Ramos. Why is it that some ESL students can practice their English in class and make great strides yet still do poorly on progress assessments? This 3-hour training provides ESL instructors with a sample of best practices for teaching the often overlooked portions of literacy that are crucial to the development of oral communication skill and fluency while increasing the comfort level of ESL students, allowing them to get over the reluctance of practicing English outside the classroom and during testing settings. Sample lessons and instructional models for teaching scenarios provided. Attendees must register here.

December 8, 2014: Adult Education and Literacy Advisory Committee Quarterly Meeting. Texas Workforce Commission’s AEL Advisory Committee will meet from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the agency’s Austin headquarters. The committee is required to meet quarterly and report to the TWC Commissioners at least annually, and is charged with advising the Commission on: the development of policies and program priorities supporting the development of an educated and skilled workforce; the development of statewide curriculum guidelines and standards for AEL services that ensure a balance of education and workplace skill development; the development of a strategy for improving student transition to postsecondary education and career and technical education training; the development of a centralized system for collecting and tracking comprehensive data on adult basic education and literacy performance outcomes; the exploration of potential partnerships with entities in the nonprofit business communities and other entities to improve statewide literacy programs; and other issues the Commission considers appropriate.

December 9, 2014: Google Hangout: Using Google Docs (a TRAIN PD Consortium event). The training will be held at 10:00 - 11:00am. Join PD Center Specialist Glenda Rose in a hands-on Google Hangout.  Google Hangout is a free web-conferencing platform that allows participants to share and collaborate in many ways.  In this session, we will go over some of the Google Hangout features, including Google Drive, and work collaboratively on a Google Doc.  Google Hangout can be accessed on mobile devices as well as from web browsers. (Chrome is preferred.)  A GMAIL account is highly recommended, but this includes Google Apps for Education GMAIL accounts.  Registration is limited to the first twelve participants, so make sure to register early here!

December 13, 2014: Preparing Students for the GED®2014 Mathematical Reasoning Test (a TRAIN PD Consortium event). Will be held at 9am - 12pm at ESC Region 20 in San Antonio. The 2014 GED® Mathematical Reasoning Test covers mathematical skills that are new to the GED®. The GEDTS states that for students to be successful in mathematics, adult education programs will need more in-depth instruction. This session provides examples and simple strategies for teaching these math skills and also for helping students develop logical thinking skills. Attendees must register here.

December 13, 2014: TISESL: Texas Industry Specific Curriculum: Sales and Service (a TRAIN PD Consortium event). Will be held at 8:30am - 3:30pm at the Irvington Learning Center in Houston, Texas. In this session, program administrators and teachers receive in-depth training on the industry-specific TISESL: curriculum for sales and service. Teachers are afforded hands-on practice using actual curriculum materials. Participants identify necessary factors for successful implementation and plan for appropriate technical assistance.

December 13, 2014: GED 2014 Geometry (a TRAIN PD Consortium event). Will be held at 8:30am - 11:30am at the Irvington Learning Center in Houston, Texas. This training is designed to provide teachers with creative teaching techniques for units of measurement in different systems to assess the characteristics of lines and geometric figures. The training includes a review on how to convert from metric and customary measures; interpret lines and graphs (e.g., coordinates, perpendicular, parallel, intersections, slope); analyze geometric figures (e.g., angles, congruence, Pythagorean Theorem); and solve problems (e.g., length, perimeter, area, surface area, volume, weight).

December 13, 2014: I-Best (a TRAIN PD Consortium event). Will be held at 12:30pm - 3:30pm at the Irvington Learning Center in Houston, Texas. In this session, participants learn the history of Washington State's Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training. Nine modules of the Integrated Teaching Training present the collaboration necessary between the skills' teacher and the basic education teacher, cultural differences in the classroom and strategies necessary to effectively address teaching styles and student learning styles and to move students from dependence to independence.
